Beginners Abstract Sculpture Courses: beginning April 2009

Learn to sculpt in a professional and relaxed environment in Devon.
Two-day weekend course for beginners, with inexpensive B&B if required.

Five day courses can be arranged, with more extensive training, and visits if desired.

Holiday tuition: mix travel and learning!

Other types of courses:

Two-day weekend course: Introduction to Marble.

3-day and 5-day Introduction to Relief Carving.

3-day midweek follow-up courses.

Also available:

individual tuition.


Tuition offered by Sam Bell, trained teacher and teaching practitioner for 20 years, currently working in a courses development context.
Educated at Sussex University, Smith College, Massachussetts and Cambridge University.
As a sculptor, Sam Bell has been practicising and training in Carrara, Italy, under the guidance of international artists, since 2002. 


Weekend courses: 9.00am - 5.00pm daily, with unsupervised extra time on Saturday evening, if required.
Cost: £120, inclusive of yard space, all tools, stone and equipment. (Use of marble extra)
B&B can be arranged, if needed, at extra cost. (First 3 students @ £12.50 pn.)

Principles of the 2-day introduction course:

Over the two days instruction will be offered in the following areas of practice:
a) Safety at work
b)  The tools and their individual uses, incl. sharpening
c) Types of stone
d) Demonstration of tool features
e) Planning and the use of maquettes

f) Work on your piece of sculpture (main work of the weekend)
g) Finishing and polishing stone

Saturday
9.00 - 9.15am  Arrivals
9.15 - 10.00am Items a) - d) above
10.00am  Discussion of what you intend to do, and choosing of stone
(Note that only soapstone will be offered for use this weekend, 
as it is a good, softer stone to begin with)
10.30am Coffee break
10.45am  On with work!
2.00pm Item e) above.

Sunday
9.30am  Item g) above
10.00am  Work!
Lunchtime Discussion of abstract art, with illustrations, if desired
